What Items Aren't Actually Recyclable?
Feb 23, 2023

It's difficult to remember which items are recyclable. A local recycling and trash pick up service will accept a wide variety of materials as long as they're placed in the proper recycling bin. However, some items should never be included in your bins, because they can cause issues at the sorting facility or even contaminate other recyclables. Let's review what items aren't recyclable.

Glass Items

Glass items, such as light bulbs and mirrors, are not recyclable. These items tend to break easily during the sorting process, which can be hazardous for any trash pick up service that handles them. Additionally, the glass may contaminate other materials if it breaks in a recycling container.

Food Waste

Food waste, such as bones and peels, is not accepted by recycling services. These materials can contaminate other recyclables. Additionally, most recycling companies do not have the equipment to process food waste. Food waste should go in the trash. However, if you want to be as eco-friendly as possible, place it in compost bins to create fertile compost for gardening or landscaping.

Hazardous Materials

Items that are flammable, corrosive, or toxic, such as batteries and paint, aren't accepted by recycling services. These materials can be dangerous when not disposed of properly. If you have such items, you can take them to a hazardous waste facility for proper disposal or put them out for your trash pick up service.

Paper Towels

Don't place paper towels in recycling bins. These items are made from a combination of wood fibers and other materials that can make them difficult to process. Additionally, food residue on these items may contaminate other recyclables. Put used paper towels in your trash bins.

Unfortunately, the recycling rate in the United States is only 34%, according to Brandon Gaille. To help increase this number, you must know which items recycling services will and won't accept. By being more aware of which items aren't recyclable, you can help ensure the materials you place in your recycling bin will make it to the right facility.
